David Kjar

Performance-studies scholar and natural trumpeter David Kjar performs with early music ensembles in Europe and South and North America and holds a master’s degree in historical performance from the Royal Conservatory of the Hague and a PhD in musicology from Boston University. His research grounds theories and philosophies on early music in specific performance experiences, reframing the early music movement as a sonically constructed and heard Other Performance. He presents nationally and internationally on the topic and has published on Wanda Landowska, the early music movement, and authenticity. Most recently, he has turned his attention to Boston early music audiences to understand better the listener’s role in shaping the identity of that city’s early music movement.He teaches undergraduate and graduate performers and composers in seminars devoted to works (Bach's B-Minor Mass, Mozart's Requiem, Rite of Spring) and special topics courses such as Performance Theory, the year 1913, and Confronting Otherness, as well courses in the music history sequence.
