About The Newberry Library:

The namesake of The Newberry Consort, The Newberry Library, founded in 1887, is one of the few surviving American independent research libraries that remains free and open to the public. The Library is home to 27.5 miles of shelf space upon which one will find 600 years of human history on subjects like American History and Culture, American Indian and Indigenous Studies, Book History, Cartography and Travel, Performing Arts and a large collection of Medieval, Renaissance and Early Modern Studies.

In the 1980s, The Newberry Library sought to create an in-house early music concert series, loosely based on the model of the Folger Consort in Washington, D.C. Mary Springfels, a renowned early string player and scholar, was offered a residency to produce music performances imagined from the treasures housed within the Library. By 1986, the ensemble has coalesced into a core group of musicians and became known as The Newberry Consort. We are delighted to return to The Newberry Library this season!
